Crock pot yogurt

We have been eating a lot of yogurt in this house so for the past couple of months I have been making my own and I wanted to share how.

You will need a crock pot, a half gallon of milk, a cup of yogurt, and a thermometer. I use a jam thermometer.

First pour your milk into the crock pot and set it on high.  You want to bring the milk almost to a boil. It should be 180 degrees Fahrenheit.  This will kill off anything bad in your yogurt.

Now turn the crock pot off, remove the cover and let it cool to 115 degrees before you add your yogurt cultures so you song accidently end up killing them.  When it has cooled to 115 degrees add 1 cup of live active yogurt cultures.  I used some from my last batch of yogurt but you can use plain store bought yogurt too.

Now comes the key you need your yogurt to cool down very slowly. After a lot of trial and some errors I have found the easiest way to do this is to wrap your crock pot up in a beach towel and leave it in a not drafty place for 8 to 10 hours.

Your yogurt will not be as thick as the yogurt you are used to buying in the store but it is delicious an inexpensive to make yourself.
